The State Hermitage Museum and its partners seek to develop the musical traditions of St. Petersburg. As Mikhail Piotrovsky explained in his interview with Interbusiness magazine, “A museum is home to all muses; all arts should exist here synthetically. The State Hermitage is musical: there are the Hermitage Theatre and the halls of the Winter Palace, where music used to play all the time. Music makes our museum alive.”

This year, the State Hermitage offers five exclusive concerts at the Hermitage Theater and the halls of the State Hermitage given by famous classical musicians. The 2nd International Festival – Dedication to Maestro pays tribute to the greatest composers and musicians by coinciding concerts with the anniversaries of renowned composers and classical musicians. This year will see the anniversaries of the births of many composes: Vivaldi’s 330th (1678-1741), Verdi’s 195th (1813-1891), Bizet’s 170th (1838-1875), Herbert von Karajan’s 100th (1908-1989), and David Oistrakh’s 100th (1908-1974).

Since the word “maestro” is many-sided, the role of Maestro will be played at the festival’s concerts by composers, honored musicians, and young artists. This year’s Dedication to Maestro will include several noteworthy events: at the festival’s opening ceremony, Honored Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler and winner of international competitions Dmitry Tatarkin will present to the audience their new violin and guitar program composed of N. Paganini, A.Vivaldi, and M. Giuliani’s works. Also, renowned French pianist Eliso Bolkvadze will appear in concert, playing the first ever Yamaha grand piano placed in the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace, with the State Hermitage Orchestra conducted by maestro Saulius Sondeckis on March 6. Celebrated baritone, Honored Artist of Russia, and soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, Vasily Gerello will present his program to the audience on March 7 in the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace, where he will sing hits from Italian operas accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra Klassika, under the conductorship of Alexander Kantorov. Again, for the first time on the Hermitage Theatre stage, a dialogue between “old” and “new” jazz schools will be presented on March 10 at a jazz concert dedicated to George Gershwin, with performances from maestro David Goloschekin and the young but famous Sergei Grigoriev Trio. Finally, L. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 will be performed by the State Hermitage Orchestra and St. Petersburg Chamber Choir with famous Moscow conductor Felix Korobov at the conductor’s stand. Korobov will also lead the singers of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre at the festival’s closing concert, devoted to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Herbert von Karajan, held within the walls of the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace.

“We have been sponsoring Hermitage music festivals over several years,” said Promsvyazbank divisional manager Tatiana Krylova. “Music at the Hermitage has a very specific sound. Hermitage concerts support the tradition originated by Catherine the Great herself. In following its mission, Promsvyazbank contributes to the revival and prosperity of great Russia, particularly through reviving its cultural traditions.”
