Swiss Stained Glass of the 16th-18th Centuries
from the Hermitage Collection
6 July 2010 - 31 October 2010
Rooms 169-173
It is the first temporary exhibition of Swiss stained glass from the Hermitage
collection mounted by the museum. On display are best specimens
of various types of coloured glass produced by Swiss masters.
In the 16th - 18th centuries stained glass became a unique phenomenon
in the art of this rather small country located in the very centre of Europe.
Stained glass panels were produced on a mass scale and greatly
impressed the contemporaries both by their large quantity and fine artistic
quality. Along with traditional Bible and Gospel subjects they showed
different aspects of the country's modern life, which makes them an invaluable
source of historical data.
The exhibition may be of interest for the wide audience including both
specialists and art lovers.
